CHOP Kidney Stone Center
The CHOP Kidney Stone Center Frontier Program is an incubator and accelerator for the development of new diagnostic tests that will transform the management of patients of all ages with kidney stone disease.
Kidney stone disease is a disorder of mineral metabolism punctuated by painful recurrent events that affect 11% of the U.S. population. Despite its high prevalence and morbidity, few diagnostics and therapeutics are available. The CHOP Kidney Stone Center integrates experts from urology, nephrology, and laboratory medicine to discover metabolomic and proteomic signatures of calcium kidney stone disease to translate these discoveries into new diagnostic tests.

Research Highlights
Pediatric KIDney Stones (PKIDS) Care Improvement Network – the PCORI-funded PKIDS trial revealed that shockwave lithotripsy resulted in similar stone clearance and better lived experiences than ureteroscopy in children and adolescents with kidney and ureteral stones.
USDHub – NIH/NIDDK funding will support the creation of a new data resource for kidney stone research by augmenting the PCORnet common data model with information extracted from CT images, clinical notes, and laboratory tests.
Personalizing Outcomes for Nephrolithiasis in Youth (PONY) – This NIH/NIDDK-funded P20 Center will predict health outcomes for children with non-obstructive kidney stones and the trajectory of experiences for youth after ureteroscopy to remove kidney stones.
Pursuing Optimal Organisms in People with Stones (POOPS) – This study aims to develop new diagnostic tests and therapeutics by understanding the differences in the bacteria and metabolites in the intestinal and urinary tract of individuals with kidney stones.
