The Advanced Career Exploration (ACE) Fellowship, formerly the Research Administration Fellowship, is a 6-month fellowship program designed to provide current Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers with critical, CV-building experience in various areas of administration. The fellowship is developed and administered by the Office of Academic Training and Outreach Programs.

The ACE Fellowship is an evolution of the institute’s successful Research Administration Fellowship Program, with additional opportunities to explore administrative careers beyond the research umbrella.

Requests for applications are typically (but not always) distributed in June/July and December/January of each year.

ACE Fellowship Program Information

The ACE Fellowship is designed to give its fellows a unique perspective of administrative career paths and institutional leadership. Fellows complete informational interviews and work closely with a team of their choosing within Research Administration to complete an independent fellowship project. Additionally, fellows participate in executive shadowing and other Research Institute leadership meetings. Concepts such as strategic planning, budgeting and interdepartmental dependencies will be introduced to the fellow.

The required independent fellowship project will focus on at least one area of the fellows' interests and ultimately benefit their host office. This project may be completed individually or in a group with other current fellows, as appropriate.

Current CHOP researchers are eligible to apply. A master's degree (or equivalent) is required. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply. Your role as a fellow must not interfere with your current position as a CHOP researcher. Applications from other institutions are not being accepted at this time.

The ideal candidate has an administration-related career goal in mind and plans to leverage the ACE experience in a career transition within two years of completing the program.

New fellows are recruited every 6 months, often in January and July of each year. A limited number of slots are available.

No, this is an unpaid fellowship program. The program provides extensive experience in the field of research administration that will benefit your professional development and your CV.

This is a part time, 6-month long program. All candidates must commit to completing the entire 6-month fellowship. Fellows may extend their experience beyond 6 months at the discretion of the fellowship director and their mentors.

The time required of fellows is very flexible and can be adjusted to suit each fellow's needs and interests. Time spent on related activities, however, is in addition to the hours required of their current research position.

Many fellows report spending 5-10 hours per week on their fellowship work, though this may vary throughout the fellowship term and based on the unit a fellow works with.

No, your mentor must agree to your participation in the fellowship by completing the Fellow/Faculty Mentor Agreement Form.

Fellows can gain experience in many areas of administration. Please view the Administrative Units of the CHOP Research Institute. In 2017, we have added new partner offices at CHOP Hospital, UPenn and Wistar. These include:
