Chan Laboratory
In the Chan lab, we are motivated by our belief that no child should die from a preventable cause. To advance our shared goal, we ground our work in rigorous science while cultivating a culture of intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and innovation.
Every year, five million children around the world die before their fifth birthday. Forty percent of these deaths occur in the neonatal period—the first 28 days of life—primarily due to infections, preterm birth complications, and intrapartum-related complications. Additionally, 295,000 mothers lose their lives annually due to complications of childbirth.
Our research group is dedicated to improving maternal and child health in underserved populations by applying robust epidemiologic methods to discover and deliver evidence-based interventions. We are driven by the goal of ending all preventable child deaths and ensuring that every child not only survives but also thrives, and reaches their full potential.
