Introductory Slide
Hello students, teachers, fellow scientists, community members, and curious minds. Welcome to the introductory episode of the series Diverse Scientist Highlights. Within this series, diverse scientists across the nation will be recognized. But first, it is necessary to state how this series defines diversity.
Definition Slide
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, diversity is the condition of having or being composed of different elements. At the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, we refer to diversity as the composition of our employees and patients that stem from the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from their differences of culture and circumstance. In other words, diversity means differences.
Examples of Diversity
People may be different in many ways. These differences include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and geographic region.
Diversity in Science
At the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, diversity amongst our employees is not only recognized but celebrated. There are several benefits to a diverse work force such as an ensured variety of different perspectives, increased creativity, higher innovation, and reduced employee turnover, to name a few.
