Researchers in the Fertility Preservation Research Unit have developed fertility preservation options for male and female children who may experience infertility after cancer chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Their long-term goal is to offer families fertility preservation options so that reproductive choices are available to children after cancer treatment.

Researchers offer families of children with cancer fertility preservation ranging from sperm banking and egg freezing to ovarian and testicular tissue freezing. Ovarian and testicular tissue freezing are experimental protocols that are currently being studied as an alternative to traditional sperm and egg banking.

In addition to these preservation services, fertility counseling is available and individualized and designed to help families of children with cancer make informed decisions about their child’s reproductive future.

Future studies will continue to focus on identifying and refining fertility preservation options and understanding the choices survivors make with their frozen specimens when they are ready to start their families.
