The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery conducts research spanning a variety of areas, using the experience of a multidisciplinary team to both advance the knowledge of conditions and improve the quality of life for the children treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Faculty members in the Division conduct basic science research to understand the underlying biology of craniofacial conditions and investigate new methods of treatment. Clinicians double as investigators, guiding laboratory research through their experience treating patients in the clinical setting in order to identify areas of need.

Clinical research is an integral component of the Division’s mission. Investigators conduct a wide variety of retrospective and prospective projects. Specifically, faculty in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery investigates treatment outcomes and long-term results of surgical therapy, provide innovative treatment with novel devices and techniques, and evaluate the psychosocial development of children with facial and body differences.

In addition, investigators and clinicians in the Division strive to understand the patient and family experience, with an eye toward ways to improve the delivery of education and care.
