A Year in Review

The holiday season is once again upon us! While it’s a time for family and friends to gather, indulge in traditions, and celebrate this season of giving, it’s also hard to believe another year has passed.

In another “I can’t believe it’s already here” tradition, the new edition of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute’s annual report is now available! The 2012 Research Annual Report details some of the many discoveries and accomplishments made at the Research Institute during fiscal year 2012. The report is available both as a PDF and as an interactive Web site.

The Research Institute is a big place, with more than 500 researchers supported by a staff in the thousands. Because a full account of their many activities and publications over the last year would read like a phonebook, the 2012 annual report is centered on the seemingly-futuristic idea of personalized medicine, something Philip R. Johnson, M.D., chief scientific officer of CHOP Research calls “far more science than science fiction.” Several of the Institute’s Centers of Emphasis — including the Center for Applied Genomics and the Center for Childhood Cancer Research  — are leading the way in this endeavor.

In addition to its focus on personalized medicine, the report also includes a roundup of the year’s top news, key investigator updates, and facts and figures about the Institute’s operations. Also included is a feature on Cellie, a plush toy and kit developed by Center for Injury Research and Prevention researchers to help children manage the many physical and emotional challenges associated with cancer treatment.
