The Importance of Family in the Early Intervention System
The Infant and Toddler Early Intervention (EI) system is distinguished by its strong emphasis on creating a partnership between families and EI service providers. In addition to helping to decide what services and supports your child needs, the EI system tailors programs to maximize your family's strengths and support your needs. Services are available to support not only the child, but also the family as a unit.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C governs the provision of services to children under the age of three who have developmental delay. Part C emphasizes the importance of parent training and consultation. Service providers should include parents in intervention so parents can continue to assist the child whenever a learning opportunity occurs – whether or not during a child's allotted service time.
