Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act
Last updated on Jun 9, 2020 in CAR Autism Roadmap™
Genetic testing can lead to a diagnosis of a genetic syndrome or may indicate an increased risk for developing certain conditions. Families are sometimes concerned that genetic testing can affect their privacy, employment, and/or insurability. The Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act is a federal law that prevents group health plans and health insurers from denying coverage to a healthy individual or charging that person higher premiums based solely on a genetic predisposition to developing a disease in the future. The legislation also prevents employers from using genetic information when making decisions related to employment, such as hiring, firing, or promotion.
