Attention Trainees: Nominations Now Open for Mentoring Award 2024
The Office of Academic Training and Outreach Programs (ATOP) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2024 Award for Excellence in Mentoring Research Trainees. The deadline to submit nominations is Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
Purpose
The Award for Excellence in Mentoring Research Trainees recognizes faculty who effectively guide and monitor the advanced training and professional development of postdoctoral fellows, physician fellows, and CHOP-based graduate students. This award honors faculty members who have provided exceptional support as research mentors.
Please Note: The primary nominator must be a Postdoctoral Fellow, Physician Fellow, or CHOP-based Graduate Student.
Eligibility
Nominees must be CHOP-based faculty in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania or Drexel research faculty.
Past trainee nominators are encouraged to update and resubmit previous nominations.
Criteria
The nominee should:
- Serve as an advisor, teacher, and advocate
- Create a supportive environment for research
- Promote a welcoming and inclusive environment in the research group
- Provide trainees with the resources necessary to take full advantage of institutional, academic, and professional opportunities (publications, conferences, networking, etc.)
- Provide career guidance for various career paths (academia, industry, government, teaching, non-research, etc.)
- Maintain accessibility by providing open lines of communication
- Provide mentorship and guidance in responsible conduct of research
How to Nominate a Mentor
The following information must be submitted to ATOP by Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.:
- Nomination form, to be completed by the primary nominator (must be a current postdoctoral fellow, physician fellow, or CHOP-based graduate student being trained by the nominee)
- One PDF (uploaded via the nomination form) containing:
- List of nominee's past trainees and current positions - Sample Trainee Table
- Mentor's brief Biosketch
- Letters of support (3 max.)
- Letters can be provided by other mentees, former trainees, research staff, faculty, etc., who can speak to the quality of mentorship.
- Competitive letters of support will address all 7 of the criteria listed above (individual paragraphs addressing each criterion specifically are recommended.)
Selection Process
Nomination packets will be reviewed by the Academic Training Advisory Council. The council will take the nominees' career/experience level into consideration and may elect to choose more than one winner.
Award Presentation
The winner will be invited to present at the May session of the Research Institute Seminar Series on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, be featured in Cornerstone, and be recognized with an award plaque.
