In 2026, we will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To mark this occasion, PHILADELPHIA250, a nonprofit and the coordinating entity for America's 250th anniversary in Philadelphia, is coordinating the "Leave a Legacy" project. To create a truly inclusive and community informed celebration, PHILADELPHIA250 is organizing a commemoration that invites all Philadelphians to submit their talents, ideas and passions to ensure 2026 is the most transformative milestone anniversary in American history.

What is Leave a Legacy?

"Leave a Legacy" is a public call for bold ideas and projects promising to have a positive and lasting impact in Philadelphia neighborhoods to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. 2026 marks the next big moment for the City of Philadelphia and PHILADELPHIA250 is evolving how our city has previously approached anniversary legacy building through the "Leave a Legacy" public call for ideas that aspire to achieve a more equitable, just and resilient city in 2026 and beyond. The projects are yet to be determined—because the ideas for the projects will be sourced from the community at large and communicated through trusted networks. However, the call will request ideas for projects or programs that strengthen the civic and social infrastructure or our neighborhoods, like community centers, literacy programs, public health initiatives and housing solutions.

What types of ideas are we looking for?

We are looking for bold ideas and initiatives that will build a more equitable, just and resilient Philadelphia in 2026 and beyond. All project development stages will be considered: conceptual, emerging or early-stage, trial-stage or an existing project. Specifically, PHILADELPHIA250 is interested in projects that will bring about positive impact in the following ways and exemplify the organization's four key values:

  • Shared Prosperity: Improve the quality of life in neighborhoods
  • Revolutionary Actions: Spark civic action to address injustices and inequities
  • People's Histories: Amplify diverse and inclusive stories of our people
  • Pursuit of Happiness: Celebrate our individual or collective passions and pastimes

A project should have a feasible implementation timeline so that it can be completed, or nearly complete, by July 4, 2025, in time for a January 1, 2026 project unveiling. Submit an Idea!

Do you have an idea for a project that has potential to build stronger civic, social, cultural and economic infrastructure in Philadelphia neighborhoods in 2026 and beyond? PHILADELPHIA250 wants to hear from you!

The call is open to individuals, community groups, for-profit companies, entrepreneurs and nonprofits, and there is no fee to apply.

Complete the two-part application process.
