Dr. Annavajhala is interested in the use of wastewater and environmental sampling to better understand pathogen-microbial community and pathogen-environment interactions. Her goal is to harness environmental surveillance to benefit population-level health.

The Center for Microbial Medicine will empower researchers to turn their discoveries in the microbiome space into therapeutic products for patients.

Our featured Faculty Spotlight for August, Joseph Zackular, PhD, studies the interaction between Clostridioides difficile and microbes.

The Penn High-throughput Screening (PHTS) Core provides the PennCHOP research community with professional PHTS screening services to identify genes or organic small molecule modulators of signaling pathways, cellular phenotypes, and protein function in models of human disease.

The John Lab studies metabolism in the setting of pediatric infections, in order to identify new anti-infective drug targets, understand drug resistance, and develop ways to diagnose disease.

Dr. Zackular's research is focused on understanding how interactions between the host, gut microbiota, and pathogenic microbes impact human health and disease. His recent efforts center on understanding how the important nosocomial pathogen, Clostridium difficile, interacts with resident gut microbiota during infection and how interspecies cross-talk impacts growth, behavior, and virulence of this pathogen.
