Nephrolithiasis

Dr. LaRosa's research interests include renal transplantation, nephrolithiasis/kidney stones, glomerular diseases, and pediatric hypertension.

Kidney stones are one of the fastest growing health conditions among children, adolescents, and young adults. The rapid increase over a short period of time has resulted in a large number of pediatric patients who require surgery to remove kidney stones with very little information available to guide selection of treatment options.

Improving the safety, quality, and health outcomes of pediatric care through clinical research. PeRC’s mission is to provide the expertise and infrastructure needed to support research within the primary care setting.

Dr. Tasian and his research team use an epidemiologic framework, including randomized trials and multi-institutional observational studies, to examine the etiology of kidney stone disease and the comparative effectiveness of surgical interventions. He also employs machine learning of complex data to improve diagnosis, risk stratification, and prediction of treatment response for children and adults with benign urologic disease.

Kidney specialists across the country agree that the incidence of kidney stones is rising among children, but clinicians are unsettled on which imaging technology to choose first when diagnosing the condition, despite current guidelines that recommend ultrasound as the initial imaging study.
