The CHOP Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology (PCEN) promotes career development for junior faculty in pediatric nephrology and opportunities for local, national, and international interdisciplinary research collaboration. Navigating funding mechanisms and grantsmanship, from NIH/NIDDK Fellowship (F) and Career Development (K) opportunities to comparable foundation grants, crafting specific aims, research strategy, and biosketches can be overwhelming for early-career investigators.

About the Workshops

The CHOP PCEN offers Grant Writing Workshops for junior investigators preparing career development grant applications. Four to six participants comprise each cohort to provide the strongest level of support to each participant. Each workshop consists of at least four sessions that provide:

  • An overview of essential elements of K-type grant applications
  • Peer review of specific aims, biosketches, and training plans
  • Discussion about strategies to receive a range of expert feedback on research plans.

Babette Zemel, PhD, an accomplished NIH investigator who collaborates closely with the leadership team of the CHOP PCEN, conducts the Grant Writing Workshops. She advises junior investigators who are preparing pilot study and other grant applications. In addition to Dr. Zemel’s leadership, participants benefit from peer perspectives as each cohort spends time reviewing each other’s work, which is often at various stages of development. The program also provides participants with peer connections with whom they can network after the workshop ends.
