Lab Safety Trainings

The Office of Research Safety offers the following courses on Lab Safety:

Introduction to Laboratory Safety
This is an introductory course in laboratory safety that must be completed by all lab based staff. This course introduces staff to safe work practices for handling common biological and chemical hazards encountered in the laboratory.

Target Audience: All lab-based staff
Required Frequency/Format: Once, In-person training
Approximate Training Time: 2 hours
Training Offered: Monthly

This is an introductory course in laboratory safety that must be completed by all lab based staff. This course introduces staff to safe work practices for handling common biological and chemical hazards encountered in the laboratory. Information on prevention of exposure to chemicals and biohazards, including human blood and body fluids is reviewed, as well as procedures to follow in the event of a spill, exposure or other emergency. Guidelines for disposal of infectious and chemical waste are also reviewed.

Attendance at this course fulfills training requirements established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (29CFR 1910.1030) and Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories (29 CFR 1910. 1450).

Bloodborne Pathogen Safety
This mandatory education module helps educate staff on how to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Target Audience: All lab-based research staff
Required Frequency/Format: Annual, Learning
Approximate Training Time: 20 minutes
Training Offered: Register via Learning

This training is covered through mandatory education via Learning and is automatically assigned each year based on job role.

Non-Traditional Personnel (NTP) Introduction to Laboratory Safety
All Non-Traditional Personnel (NTP) are required to complete the Non-Traditional Personnel Introduction to Laboratory Safety training. This course introduces staff to safe work practices for handling common biological and chemical hazards encountered in the laboratory.

Target Audience: Non-Traditional Personnel
Required Frequency/Format: Once, In-person training
Approximate Training Time: 1 hour
Training Offered: Bi-weekly

All Non-Traditional Personnel (NTP) are required to complete the Non-Traditional Personnel Introduction to Laboratory Safety training. If you are unsure if you are NTP status, please refer to the Categories of NTP.

If you are unable to attend a regularly scheduled session within 30 days of your start date, please contact the Office of Research Safety Training Coordinator at researchsafety@email.chop.edu or 267-426-2272 to schedule an alternate time for training.
