Dr. Weiss' research focuses on epidemiology of pediatric sepsis and mitochondrial dysfunction in sepsis-associated organ injury. The driving hypothesis for his research is that alterations in mitochondrial bioenergetics contribute to organ injury and immune dysregulation in a subset of children with sepsis.
Automated programs can identify which sick infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have sepsis hours before clinicians recognize the life-threatening condition. A team of data researchers and physician-scientists tested machine-learning models in a NICU population, drawing only on routinely collected data available in electronic health records (EHRs).
PRagMatic Pediatric Trial of Balanced vs. nOrmaL Saline FlUid in Sepsis (PRoMPT BOLUS) is a clinical trial to compare two commonly used treatments for pediatric sepsis to see if one is more effective and safer than the other. The treatments in this study are two different intravenous fluids: normal saline and lactated Ringer’s.
The PRoMPT BOLUS Feasibility Pilot Clinical Trial was performed between January and August 2018 to determine whether the feasibility of a multicenter, pragmatic randomized clinical trial to compare balanced (e.g., lactated Ringer’s) and 0.9% saline fluid resuscitation in children with suspected septic shock.
