Lamia P. Barakat

Dr. Barakat's research is focused on examining risk-and-resilience models to characterize disease management and health-related quality of life of children with chronic health conditions and their families. Another focus of investigation is translation of these models into evidence-based assessment (family psychosocial risk screening) as well as family-based, mHealth interventions to improve disease management and to support medical decision-making for youth with cancer and their families.

Lisa A. Schwartz

Dr. Schwartz's research focuses on behavioral and psychosocial aspects of cancer and its treatment in adolescents and young adults (AYAs), a group of patients with unique medical and psychosocial challenges. Most of her current studies aim to understand and improve self-management among AYAs.

Chavis A. Patterson

Dr. Patterson’s work focuses on stressors that put children and families at risk for future difficulties. He offers psychosocial care to families as they cope with having a child in a N/IICU. Partnering with the interdisciplinary team, he functions as an administrative leader, educator, and researcher.

James P. Guevara

Dr. Guevara is the principal investigator on research grants evaluating health inequities in early childhood development and behavioral problems. He utilizes community-based participatory clinical trials involving parent advocacy groups, community organizations, and government agencies to test the effects of psychosocial interventions designed to provide parents with resources and tools to improve the care of their children.

Dr. Burris is a perinatal researcher motivated by unequal birth outcomes across populations in the United States. She uses molecular epidemiologic approaches to study the intersection of social and environmental factors and how they contribute to birth outcome disparities.

Dr. Xanthopoulos's research focuses on the development, implementation, and adherence to medical and lifestyle interventions, including non-invasive ventilation (CPAP/BPAP), eating habits, physical activity, and sleep. She has a particular interest in the interactions among behavioral, lifestyle, psychosocial and physiologic factors as they relate to health and neurobehavioral functioning and quality of life in youth and families.
