Sabrina A. Gmuca Headshot

Dr. Gmuca seeks to enhance the care of children with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Her current research addresses amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome, which is a major public health issue because of its high prevalence, related socioeconomic burden, and associated risk of opioid exposure. Dr. Gmuca’s work aims to identify innovative strategies to improve long-term treatment outcomes for this patient population.

Naomi T. Hughes

Dr. Naomi Hughes is a pediatric emergency physician. Her work is focused on improving care for children with migraine in the acute setting, and improving pain management for all children in the ED.

Ty Muhly, MD
Wallis T. Muhly

Dr. Muhly is a clinical investigator within the Division of Anesthesiology. His areas of investigation include pain management in pediatric patients presenting for complex surgical interventions and the application of quality improvement methodology to improve the perioperative care of children.

Tori Nicole Sutherland, MD, MPH
Tori Nicole Sutherland

Dr. Sutherland's work includes trials and large database analysis to improve patient safety in areas including maternal mortality reduction, and oxygen therapy for hypoxemia and antimicrobial resistance. Currently, her research focuses on opioid-sparing pain management for children and risk factors for adverse outcomes after surgery among adolescents.

Lawrence Wells, MD
Lawrence Wells, MD

Dr. Wells is an attending physician and associate director of the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at CHOP. His research focuses on articular cartilage injury and repair mechanisms, avascular necrosis, stress fractures in adolescents, and post-operative pain management in ambulatory surgery patients.

C. Dean Kurth

Dr. Kurth is a physician-scientist-leader in pediatric anesthesiology, quality and safety, and pediatric healthcare. He has experience conducting basic, clinical, and translational research studies as well as quality improvement projects to investigate clinical problems and develop technologies to understand the problem and devise therapies to prevent or treat it.

Lisa A. Schwartz, PhD
Lisa A. Schwartz

Dr. Schwartz's research focuses on behavioral and psychosocial aspects of cancer and its treatment in adolescents and young adults (AYAs), a group of patients with unique medical and psychosocial challenges. Most of her current studies aim to understand and improve self-management among AYAs.

Andreas W. Loepke, MD, PhD, FAAP
Andreas W. Loepke

Dr. Andreas Loepke is division chief of Cardiac Anesthesia and a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at CHOP, and professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on pediatric anesthesiology and critical care medicine.

Ronald S. Litman

Dr. Litman is a crusader for safer medication practices, and his major research interest is on the effects of sedative and anesthetic agents on upper airway patency.

Melissa A. Lerman, MD, PhD, MSCE
Melissa A. Lerman

Dr. Lerman's research interests include non-infectious uveitis and temporomandibular (TMJ) arthritis. Her studies examine the utility of biologic agents to achieve, and maintain, uveitis control. Up to 80 percent of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) have potentially erosive TMJ arthritis, and she is exploring ways to best identify and monitor this often asymptomatic manifestation of JIA.
