Neil D. Romberg, MD
Neil D. Romberg

Dr. Romberg investigates the regulatory mechanisms enabling our immune systems to fight infections without injuring ourselves. He is particularly interested in the immune system of patients with primary immunodeficiency who are susceptible to both life-threatening infections and autoimmune diseases. Greater insights into these rare diseases may enable rationale development of targeted therapies for more common diseases with an immunologic basis.

Michael Silverman, MD, PhD
Michael Silverman

Dr. Silverman studies the fundamental aspects of early-life commensal microbes that influence immune system development and function. He discovered that the MHC-II E molecule prevents type 1 diabetes by shaping the intestinal microbiota early in life.

Christopher J. Cardinale, MD, PhD
Christopher J. Cardinale

Dr. Cardinale's research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of gene expression and gene regulation in autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, and systemic sclerosis. He uses data from large-scale genomic studies to identify disease-causing genetic variants and functionally explore the target genes of those variants.

Lubica Rauova, MD, PhD
Lubica Rauova

Dr. Rauova is a researcher in the Division of Hematology at CHOP and a research associate professor of Pediatrics in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the molecular and cellular interactions involved in hemostasis and thrombosis.

E-mail:
lubica [at] chop.edu
David T. Teachey, MD
David T. Teachey

Dr. Teachey's research focuses on investigating novel therapeutics for children with white blood cell diseases, including ALL and a rare autoimmune disease called Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (ALPS). His research in ALL focuses on studying leukemic cells from children with high-risk disease.

Paula M. Oliver, PhD
Paula M. Oliver

Dr. Oliver investigates the mechanisms governing T cell activation and protective immunity. Her goal is to define mechanisms that, when dysregulated, result in autoimmunity or allergic disorders like asthma.

Edward M. Behrens, MD
Edward M. Behrens

Dr. Behrens' research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of cytokine storm syndromes, including the hemophagocytic syndromes Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and Macrophage Activation Syndrome (MAS).

E-mail:

Leyuan Ma, PhD
Leyuan Ma

Dr. Ma focuses on immune engineering. He leverages genetic, chemistry, and engineering tools to dissect immune cell-cell and cell-tissue crosstalk and harness these crosstalk mechanisms to develop biomaterials, protein, and cell-based precision immunotherapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Kathleen E. Sullivan, MD, PhD
Photo of Kathleen E. Sullivan

Dr. Sullivan's research focuses on new and rare immunodeficiencies. She has a long-standing interest in one of the most common of the primary immunodeficiencies – chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. She also investigates common variable immunodeficiency, as well as the genetics and epigenetics of systemic lupus erythematosus.

Nikolaos G. Sgourakis, PhD
Nikolaos G. Sgourakis

Dr. Sgourakis’ research focuses on understanding the intricate molecular mechanisms that determine the vast repertoire of peptide antigens displayed by the proteins of the Major Histocompatibility Complex for immune surveillance by T cells and Natural Killer cells.
