Kevin Downes, MD
Kevin Downes

The research interests of Dr. Downes focus on antimicrobial clinical pharmacology and pharmacoepidemiology in children with a goal to identify novel approaches to optimize efficacy, minimize toxicity, and limit antimicrobial resistance from antibiotics.

Karen M. Puopolo, MD, PhD
Karen M. Puopolo

Dr. Puopolo helped lead the research team that developed and validated multivariate prediction models for neonatal early-onset sepsis risk assessment. Her current research addresses the impacts of maternal immunity, perinatal antibiotic exposure, and neonatal infection on infant and childhood health.

E-mail:

Gregory Tasian, MD, MSCE
Gregory Tasian

Dr. Tasian and his research team use an epidemiologic framework, including randomized trials and multi-institutional observational studies, to examine the etiology of kidney stone disease and the comparative effectiveness of surgical interventions. He also employs machine learning of complex data to improve diagnosis, risk stratification, and prediction of treatment response for children and adults with benign urologic disease.

Dustin Daniel Flannery, DO, MSCE
Dustin Daniel Flannery

Dr. Flannery's research interests are perinatal infectious diseases and neonatal antimicrobial resistance and stewardship.

E-mail:

Sabrina A. Gmuca, MD, MSCE
Sabrina A. Gmuca Headshot

Dr. Gmuca seeks to enhance the care of children with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Her current research addresses amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome, which is a major public health issue because of its high prevalence, related socioeconomic burden, and associated risk of opioid exposure. Dr. Gmuca’s work aims to identify innovative strategies to improve long-term treatment outcomes for this patient population.

Alain J. Benitez, MD, MSTR
Alain J. Benitez, MD, MSTR

Dr. Benitez is currently building a comprehensive translational research program in which he hopes to study the role of brain-gut-microbiome and microbiome-mucosal interactions in the development of functional GI and motility disorders.

E-mail:
beniteza [at] chop.edu
Nancy J. Bunin, MD

Dr. Bunin's current research focuses on the development of hematopoietic stem cell graft engineering for allogeneic transplantation to minimize graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), promote engraftment and immune reconstitution. She has also developed protocols for rapid manufacture of viral cytotoxic T lymphocytes to treat or prevent life threatening viral infections post hematopoietic stem cell transplant.

E-mail:

Lakshmi Srinivasan, MD, FAAP
Lakshmi Srinivasan

Dr. Srinivasan is an attending neonatologist with the Pediatric Sepsis Program and the Division of Neonatology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her research focuses on biomarkers in neonatal inflammation and infection; and improving prediction, recognition and management of neonatal infections.

E-mail:
srinivasanl [at] chop.edu
Paul A. Offit, MD
Paul A. Offit

Dr. Offit is director of the Vaccine Education Center at CHOP and an internationally recognized expert in the fields of virology and immunology. He is co-inventor of a landmark vaccine achievement for the prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis.

E-mail:

Julie C. Fitzgerald, MD, PhD, MSCE
Julie C. Fitzgerald

Dr. Fitzgerald's research focuses on the impact of pediatric sepsis on renal dysfunction. She examines biomarkers that may be helpful in predicting renal dysfunction in septic acute kidney injury, and the impact of resuscitative therapies and pharmacometrics in sepsis on the development of sepsis-related renal dysfunction.
