The online and in-person sessions that meet the RCR Training Requirement are described below. Information for how to participate in RCR sessions as an Instructor is also provided.

The CITI RCR course covers the core ethical principles and regulations that govern research practices in key areas. CITI RCR online modules can be completed in approximately 5 hours. Most modules contain a post-test and require a passing score of 80%.

Access and Instructions

Visit www.citiprogram.org and follow the instructions below:

New Users

  1. Select "Register Here" and fill in steps 1-7. Choose Children's Hospital of Philadelphia" as your institution and continue the registration process by filling in all requested information.
  2. On the "What Curriculum You are Registering For?" page, select "Responsible Conduct of Research for Postdocs, Fellows, Trainees, and NIH Early Career Investigators" and select "Next".
  3. At the "Courses Ready to Begin" page, click "Start Now".

Returning CITI Users

  1. Log in using your previous username and password. On the "Institutional Courses" page, choose "View Courses" for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. If you do not see this, you may need to "add an affiliation" with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
  2. Select "Learner Tools" and select "Add a Course".
  3. Select "Responsible Conduct of Research for Postdocs, Fellows, Trainees, and NIH Early Career Investigators" and click "Start Now".

Certificates and Tracking

Certificates and course transcripts can be generated directly from the CITI website for personal records.

The CHOP Research Institute eTraining system receives an automatic email notification from CITI whenever a CHOP-affiliated individual has completed the RCR module. These records are centrally maintained via the eTraining system.

The In-Person RCR sessions combine lectures and discussions facilitated by research faculty and administrators. Interactive learning experiences include case studies, panel presentations, and roundtable exercises. Institutional policy, federal regulations, recent articles, best practices and ethical implications are reviewed for each topic as applicable.

RCR 1 and RCR 2 session topics are independent of each other. The sessions can be completed in any order during the first or second year of fellowship training or federal grant award.

RCR 1 - 4-hour session covers the topics of Responsible Authorship and Publication Practices, Collaborative Science, Peer Review, Mentoring, and Current Topics.

RCR 2 - 4-hour session covers the topics of Researcher in Society, Data Management - Acquisition, Sharing and Ownership, Research Misconduct, Conflicts of Interest, Intellectual Property, Research Safety, and Current Topics.

Session Dates and Registration

RCR 1 and RCR 2 sessions are scheduled several times throughout the year. 2024 session dates are listed below.

  • September 10, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (Breakfast at 8:30 am) - Roberts Center, 1120-AB
  • November 13, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Lunch at 11:30 am) - Roberts Center, 1120-AB
RCR Session 2
  • October 7, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Lunch at 11:30 am) - Roberts Center, 1120-AB
  • December 5, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (Breakfast at 8:30 am) - Roberts Center, 1120-AB

CHOP faculty contribute to both formal and informal instruction in RCR training. K awardees, research faculty and senior fellows can meet their federal and institutional RCR training requirements by serving as instructors in a minimum of one, in-person training session.

Faculty Roles and Topics

RCR faculty instructors serve as a panel moderators, panelists, discussion leaders, speakers or subject matter experts. Topic assignments are based on faculty interest and may include: Authorship; Collaboration; Conflicts of Interest; Data Management – Acquisition, Integrity, Sharing, Ownership; Intellectual Property; Mentoring; Peer Review; Research Misconduct; Unconscious Bias and others.

Preparation and Time Commitment

Session preparation is not intended to be time consuming. RCR educational materials (e.g., key topic points, case studies, discussion questions, articles) and support are provided for the sessions. Faculty are encouraged to share their own examples and scenarios.

  4. Under “Select Curriculum”, Q4, select "RCR for Postdocs, Fellows, Trainees, and NIH Early Career Investigators REFRESHER", click "Next" and then “Start Now” to begin the course.
