Bio

I have long-term expertise in the pathophysiology and genetics of several murine models of hematopoiesis-, inflammation- and iron-related disorders, and in the use of lentiviral vectors for modulation of gene expression and gene transfer for the cure of hemoglobinopathies. After having established the first therapeutic lentiviral vector carrying the ß-globin gene and the mouse model of adult lethal Cooley’s anemia or ß-thalassemia major, my studies focused on generating new lentiviral vectors for treatment of the hemoglobinopathies and to evaluate their ability to correct the hemoglobin synthesis in human cells as well as in mice affected by ß-thalassemia.

I characterized the role of seminal factors contributing to the morbidity and mortality in ß-thalassemia, Polycythemia vera, hemochromatosis and in anemia of inflammation, such as such hepcidin, intereleukin-2 and ferroportin, the phosphokinase Jak2 and macrophages. Based on some of these studies, I have developed or contributed to the characterization of novel therapeutics.
