Director, Orthopaedic Engineering and 3D Musculoskeletal Imaging

Dr. Pasha studies the mechanism of spinal deformity development in the pediatric population. She uses analytical and computational methods to better understand the pathogenesis of pediatric scoliosis. Her lab develops medical devices and software packages that can be used in orthopedic clinics worldwide.

Dr. Pasha is the founding director of the Orthopaedic Engineering and 3D musculoskeletal imaging lab at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. With a background in engineering, Dr. Pasha aims to bring quantitative methods and techniques to the field of orthopaedics with a focus on addressing the clinicians' need and to improve quality of care. 

Dr. Pasha's research mainly focuses on studying the biomechanics of the spine. She has used various methods, including gait and motion analysis, finite element simulation, machine learning and deep learning in medical image processing, and 3D modeling to investigate the function of the human spine.

She has established collaborative work with several national and international research teams and has been an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society since 2015. She was appointed as an assistant professor in orthopaedic surgery (research track) at the Perelman School of Medicine in the University of Pennsylvania in 2019. 

Dr Pasha's notable career accomplishments include:

  • Developing a quantitative model of the pediatric spine, based on concepts in mechanical engineering, that can explain the pathogenesis of idiopathic scoliosis.
  • Developing and validating a classification system for spinal deformity, in collaboration with a team of orthopaedic surgeons and pediatric radiologists.
  • Developing a patented application for surgical decision making of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
