Dr. Sze's research interests lie in human factors engineering to improve quality and safety; 3D printing for procedural training, simulation, and biomedical device design; machine learning to augment radiologist interpretation and workflow; and qualitative research to improve patient experience.
Bio
Dr. Sze is an attending radiologist within the Division of Body Imaging, the associate radiologist-in-chief, and an associate professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sze's areas of research focus include human factors engineering to improve patient quality and safety; additive manufacturing (3D printing) for procedural training, patient-specific simulation, and biomedical device design and prototyping; machine learning to augment radiologist interpretation and workflow; physician and staff wellness to reduce burnout; qualitative research to improve patient experience; and master coaching to achieve expertise, as opposed to post graduate training (residency and fellowship to achieve competency).
Prior to joining the faculty at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, he was the chief of Radiology at Children’s National Health Systems, where physician, staff, and patient experience and wellbeing were his top priorities. Programs included creating a dedicated child life specialist team to help children and families cope with the stress of undergoing diagnostic and interventional imaging studies (this team was awarded the first Child Life Council grant to study the economic benefit of a dedicated child life team to reduce sedation in MRI); collaborating with architects and designers and engaging frontline staff to co-create medical environments that optimize patient experience and staff workflow; introducing acting workshops for frontline staff to help them develop constructive coping strategies for challenging patient situations; a healthcare "MBA" (Minimal Business Acumen) course for radiology residents, trainees, and faculty; and multiple successful engagements with the George Washington School of Business including keystone projects with MBA students.
Dr. Sze also heads the Children’s Hospital Additive Manufacturing for Pediatrics (CHAMP) Lab. CHAMP Lab is collaborating with the PPDC to use its resources to fill areas of need at CHOP.
