Pankaj Sharma, PhD
Research Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Pankaj Sharma is a postdoctoral fellow focused on the regulation of iron metabolism and the development of iron-related disorders. He works with animal models to investigate how mono-ferric forms of transferrin influence iron regulation in the bone marrow and may contribute to disease pathogenesis.

Bio

Dr. Sharma joined the Rivella Lab as a postdoctoral fellow in April 2024. He completed his PhD, in Molecular Genetics at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, where he focused on the genetic basis of iron-related anemias in the Indian population.

His doctoral research included developing a targeted screening panel for these anemias, proposing clinical classification strategies, and functionally validating novel mutants. After submitting his thesis, Dr. Sharma conducted a transcriptome analysis of pediatric T-ALL, highlighting the roles of transcriptome variations, specifically the long non-coding RNAs in the pathogenesis of childhood T-ALL.

In the Rivella Lab, Dr. Sharma explores the role of mono-ferric forms of transferrin in regulating iron metabolism. He aims to leverage these insights to develop therapies for diseases such as thalassemia and polycythemia vera. Additionally, he is working on developing gene therapy for the iron overload disorder hemochromatosis.
