1. Asthma clinical care: Building on my long term involvement with the management of children and adolescents with asthma, I have developed expertise in diagnosis and clinical care. I have also had a long term teaching experience with families, nursing, physicians in training, general and sub-specialty physicians, and individuals in industry. This has contributed to the recognition of Allergy to a leader in asthma care within our institution. Further, my efforts have led to new approaches and protocols at CHOP. Together with Dr. Mark Magnusson, I helped to develop the currently employed inpatient asthma management paradigm at CHOP. Next, I led the effort to create an asthma initiative at CHOP. This muli-disciplinary task force created a standardized asthma care plan now incorporated into our electronic medical record (EPIC). This is used to compile one of the key performance measures for our institution. The basic concept and structure of this tool was developed by myself while I led the Allergy Section. During the asthma initiative, I also led the creation of CHOP's own asthma control tool which was brought to fruition by Dr. Joe Zorc as part of his masters degree completion. This is part of our medical record as well. Our key leaders from this initiative transitioned into an ongoing advisory group actively refining asthma management for our clinical operations at CHOP. Finally, I asked the Pathology Laboratory at CHOP to develop a molecular pathology test for genotyping the beta adrenergic receptor in order to identify those asthma patients who are at risk for complications from albuterol overuse. This experience will provide the foundation for my own textbook guide to asthma management in children and adolescents directed first to parents, and then to pediatricians in training and generalists.
2. Food allergy: During the development of the Allergy program at CHOP, I created our food challenge program. At the outset, there was little national experience in this procedure. This program has grown because of its pivotal role in food allergy management. We now have the largest volume of pediatric food challenges performed in the US. I continue to perform challenges in our Division. And I continue to provide food allergy diagnosis and management for all presentations of food allergy in childhood. Over time, I have continued to see a large volume of referrals. A particular interest is the diagnosis and management of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES).
3. Pediatric Allergy consultation: During my years in leadership as Allergy Chief at CHOP and in my continued practice within the CHOP system, I have developed a broad experience in all types of allergy problems in infants to young adults.
