Bio

Dr. Degnan's research and clinical training has focused on the development and application of imaging approaches to advance patient care through accurate diagnosis and improved prognostication.

His clinical research focuses on advancing imaging diagnosis of musculoskeletal-related conditions. As part of an ongoing study funded by the Society for Pediatric Radiology, Dr. Degnan is leveraging advanced imaging techniques including magnetic resonance spectroscopy and other quantitative imaging MRI methods to the evaluation of organ and bone marrow involvement in Gaucher disease. Other work has applied quantitative diffusion-weighted imaging assessment of bone and soft tissue tumor response to chemotherapy.

Dr. Degnan's early research work explored the application of advanced magnetic resonance imaging methods including iron oxide particle imaging of atherosclerosis to enhance stroke risk assessment at the University of Cambridge and multimodal metabolic, structural, and function imaging of the pediatric brain at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh including grant funding from the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology.

His goals as a clinical pediatric radiologist and researcher are to enhance the understanding and diagnosis of pediatric metabolic and musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, as a former American College of Radiology Moorefield Health Policy and Economics fellow, he continues to be actively involved in advancing patient care at the intersection between appropriate diagnostic imaging utilization and healthcare policy.
