Bio
Dr. Moustafa's work revolves around the development of a cryo-genomics archive, focusing on both pathogenic and commensal microbes. His team leverages big genomics data and novel bioinformatics tools to understand microbial species' natural variation and reconstruct evolutionary events leading to epidemic strains.
He has served as Director of the CHOP Microbiome Sequencing Core, Co-founder and Associate Director of the Center for Microbial Medicine, and Co-director of the microbial ARchive and Cryo-collection (mARC), a novel strain bank initiative, for the past two years. In these roles, Dr. Moustafa is entrusted with sequencing thousands of microbial isolates and microbiome samples. His research emphasis spans bacterial pathogenesis, microbial bioinformatics, and microbial evolution.
During his PhD, Dr. Moustafa investigated an infectious diseases in Pakistan and Southeast Asia, bolstering his commitment to the "One Health" concept. Beyond research, Dr. Moustafa passionately promotes microbial genomics education. He organizes workshops, empowering participants with practical knowledge and techniques in microbial genomics.
