The Health Equity Research Methods (HERMes) Initiative aims to advance health equity research and translation across Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and CHOP Research Institute. This initiative will quantify, amplify, and build upon the existing work of various centers and health equity-oriented investigators. In this way, HERMes will position CHOP as a national leader in health equity research.

CHOP's Center for Health Equity Research and Education Core convened researchers with interests in advancing health equity and mitigating disparities to generate best practices and recommendations for how to integrate health equity into each step of the research process.

The initiative is focused on examining and supporting health equity science concepts such as:

  • Inclusive and representative study samples to enhance validity and transportability
  • Equity-oriented epidemiology and biostatistics (e.g., conceptual models, causal inference, identifying drivers, social epidemiology)
  • Translating and disseminating findings to communities
  • Community-research partnerships
  • Equity considerations in other novel sciences (e.g., precision medicine, artificial intelligence, genomics)
  • Scholars and research professionals from diverse backgrounds.
