The Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) presents "Informatics Talks:"

Harnessing the EHR for Timely Diagnosis and Personalized Management for Children with Rare Genetic Diseases

Speaker:
Ian Campbell, MD, PhD
Attending Physician

While individually rare, millions of children in the US live with a genetic disease. However, diagnosis and management of these disorders are often hampered by lack of clinician familiarity with genetics, a critical shortage of medical genetics specialists, and barriers to genetic testing. At CHOP, we are addressing these by attempting to computationally assist diagnosis and through implementation of disease-specific clinical decision support in the electronic health record (EHR). We are developing evidence-based genetic diagnostic methods using state-of-the-art natural language processing and machine learning. Further, by extending the Epic Genomics module, we can help ensure that every child with a rare genetic disorder receives the best care possible.
