The Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics presents Informatics Talks:

Speaker:

Alain Benitez, MD, MSTR
Director, Clinical Research
Suzi and Scott Lustgarten Center for GI Motility at CHOP

About Dr. Alain Benitez
Dr. Alain Benitez is an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and serves as the Director of Clinical Research at the Suzi and Scott Lustgarten Center for GI Motility at CHOP. With more than a decade of experience in basic and translational research in Gastroenterology, he has specialized in evaluating esophageal inflammation, motility, and the microbiome of the esophagus.

For more than five years, Dr. Benitez has focused on gastrointestinal motility, particularly the use of emerging technologies to assess bowel motility in pediatric patients. His recent research has concentrated on early life factors that may contribute to the development of functional gastrointestinal disorders, including disorders of gut-brain interaction such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Dr. Benitez aims to adopt a whole-person approach in studying IBS in children. He employs data from electronic medical records, prospective longitudinal studies, and innovative technologies to comprehensively assess symptoms, dietary influences, bowel motility, psychosocial health, and environmental factors in children with IBS. His studies not only aim to clarify disease pathophysiology but also seek to identify more effective therapeutic pathways for affected children.
