A familiar face around Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Research Institute, we are thrilled to announce that Flaura Winston, MD, founder and scientific director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention, was the recent recipient of two Healthcare Awards from the UK-based publication, Women In Business (WIB) Worldwide. Dr. Winston was recognized as the “Best Children’s Health Executive” and “Best Child Healthcare Service & Pediatrician of the Year 2017” for the state of Pennsylvania.

With a packed portfolio of injury-prevention research under her belt, we’re not quite sure where to start with Dr. Winston’s many contributions to healthcare! A Board-certified pediatrician, engineer, and public and behavioral health researcher, Dr. Winston’s current work focuses on traffic injury in children and teens — one of the leading causes of death and disability for adolescents. Her research spans from preventing teen driver crashes, to improving child passenger safety, to addressing posttraumatic stress after injury, to evidence-based digital health. Thanks to her rigorous research-to-action-to-impact approach, Dr. Winston’s work has led to patents and a startup called Diagnostic Driving that provides driving assessments to corporate fleets, universities, a state, and adolescents. Her expertise is also put to solid use as a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, an associate editor of Injury Prevention, the director of the National Science Foundation’s Center for Child Injury Prevention Studies, and many more outlets, including US federal advisory panels.

“I am so grateful for the incredible environment provided by CHOP and its Research Institute. The Center for Injury Research and Prevention allows me to innovate and operate at my peak,” Dr. Winston said. “All of my work is only possible due to the teams of people with whom I work, the children, teens, and their families who participate in our studies and the stakeholders who take our findings and translate them into new products, programs, and policies to improve the safety of our children, families and communities.”

WIB Worldwide Magazine’s stated goal is to provide information and insight about the women leading corporate business with their achievements. Every year, the publication recognizes women around the globe for their work in improving healthcare with the Healthcare Awards. In a press release, WIB’s Awards Coordinator Ellie Homes said of the Healthcare Awards: “The healthcare industry at times can be one of the most challenging but certainly rewarding industry, and the women who work and volunteer in order to give the best service and commitment to each patient deserve to be rewarded and recognized.”

Congratulations, Dr. Winston!
