Autism Insurance Legislation

Mandated insurance coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has passed in many states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The passage of state autism insurance laws demonstrates that some fiscal responsibility belongs to the health insurance companies. In many states, the impetus for mandated coverage for ASD treatments was to reduce the financial burdens from the states themselves.

Each state has its own distinct rules and regulations. It is important to note that not all private insurance plans are required to provide coverage for ASD treatments.

For information about a particular state's program, click on the state name listed below. You may need to call the Human Resources Department at your place of employment to find out if your family is eligible for mandated insurance coverage of ASD treatments.

The Center for Autism Research and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia do not endorse or recommend any specific person or organization or form of treatment. The information included within the CAR Autism Roadmap™ and CAR Resource Directory™ should not be considered medical advice and should serve only as a guide to resources publicly and privately available. Choosing a treatment, course of action, and/or a resource is a personal decision, which should take into account each individual's and family's particular circumstances.
