The New Year is upon us and the Research Institute Shipping Core (RISC) closure quickly approaches. Below are important deadlines and changes coming up in the new year.

Training

All staff who will pack, label, and prepare documentation for dangerous goods shipments must complete the Proper Transport of Infectious Substances training by March 31, 2022. This will allow sufficient time for users to ship independently while troubleshooting any issues that arise during the time that RISC is still in operation. RISC will not accept orders after May 31, 2022. The month of June will be dedicated solely to additional training sessions for staff as well hands-on consultations for those who wish to schedule them (sign-up information to follow).

Trained Staff

Beginning March 1, 2022, RISC will no longer accept orders from staff who are trained for the hazards they are shipping. RISC will provide guidance and support for those who have questions or need assistance. Should support be needed, please plan a time in advance for a consultation.

Non-hazardous, Non-regulated Items

Beginning February 1, 2022, RISC will no longer accept shipping orders for non-hazardous, non-regulated items regardless of the temperature of the shipment. Examples include documents, hard drives, pipettors, and other instruments and equipment that do not contain any hazards such as lithium batteries, compressed gases, etc. This also includes study drug medications that are not subject to the dangerous goods regulations.

RISC will provide guidance on ordering information for temperature gel packs to those who need them. Please keep in mind that if you need to ship a non-hazardous item on dry ice, you must complete the Proper Transport of Infectious Substances training session no later than March 31, 2022.

  • Action: UPS CampusShip should be used for these types of items whenever possible. Request a UPS CampusShip login tied to your cost center and/or activity number(s) in Service Now.
  • Action: If you are unsure your item is hazardous or contains hidden dangerous goods, email a product description, with manufacturer link and Safety Data Sheet to RISC for review at least one week prior to your scheduled shipment.
  • Action: Identify at least one to two dedicated shippers who will become Certified Shippers within the lab, research team, or department/center/program and register for one of RISC's monthly shipping trainings, Proper Transport of Infectious Substances, as soon as possible.

All orders must be submitted one business day in advance; deadline for order submission is 3:30 p.m. Orders received after the 3:30 p.m. cutoff will not be shipped the next business day.

Preparing for the Future

  • RISC will encourage staff who have recently attended a training session to transition to independent shipping.
  • New job aids, training modules, and online resources are being developed to assist Certified Shippers with independent shipping. Please stay tuned for future announcements with those important updates.

Important Reminders

  • Beginning June 1, 2022, all shipping activities (classification, packing, labeling, marking, and documentation preparation) will become the responsibility of each lab's designated trained and Certified Shipper(s).

The Office of Research Safety will provide consultation services for basic shipping needs and some technical support for more complex services (e.g., import and export permits, international shipping guidance), but will not pack or prepare documentation for shipments.
