Welcome to the first of the CHOP Center for Injury Research and Prevention's e-Newsletters. These occasional updates will provide the latest news, research developments, and announcements from the Center. We've designed this newsletter to serve our research colleagues, industry partners, safety educators and advocates. In this issue, along with the latest news and research updates, we'll highlight the Center's workshops and presentations at the 2007 Lifesavers Conference, just days away. We'll look forward to seeing many of you there!

News from the CHOP & State Farm Research Partnership
CHOP and State Farm Announce Mission to Keep Young Drivers Safe
On January 25th, researchers from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and executives from State Farm (R) were joined by the Arends family in Gibson City, IL, to announce their commitment to advance scientific research in the arena of teen driving. State Farm recently committed its support for the multi-year, multi-million dollar CHOP-State Farm young driver research project through at least 2010. The third Partners for Child Passenger Safety CPS Issue Report released on March 5th provides the new research that supports the enactment of optimal restraint laws to increase restraint use among key age groups. Kristy Arbogast, Ph.D., Director of Field Engineering at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention, presented data from PCPS crash investigations to provide insight into common misuse of the LATCH system, including: loose attachment of LATCH webbing straps to the vehicle seat; non-use of the top-tether for forward-facing seats; and use of rear outboard LATCH anchors to install the seat in the center rear position. The Center for Injury Research and Prevention Hosts Multi-site Violence Prevention Collaborative
Through a cooperative agreement with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The Philadelphia Collaborative Violence Prevention Center (PCVPC) brings together The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and Drexel University with community-based organizations to address and prevent violence and aggression in the lives of young people in West and Southwest Philadelphia.
