I am the Associate Director of the Developmental Neuroimaging Laboratory at the Center for Autism Research. My research focuses on the neurobiology of emotion, social processes, and Autism-Spectrum Disorders (ASD). I am particularly interested in understanding the emotional
experiences of individuals with ASD - a topic that is often overlooked by scientists and service providers alike. As a clinician, issues of classification and diagnosis play a prominent role in my work, especially the similarity between aspects of ASD and anxiety disorders. One of my research goals is to establish whether ASD and some anxiety disorders (such as OCD and social phobia) share common neural mechanisms; if so, this may lead to significant changes in how we
conceptualize and treat ASD.
Another focus of my research is on how individuals become so highly skilled at processing social information in their environment (facial expressions, gestures, etc.), and how these processes may develop differently in ASD. I am presently carrying out a series of studies examining how visual perception areas may work in tandem with movement generation areas (such as premotor cortex) during the interpretation of gestures and body language. Although I use a variety of measures in my research, my primary area of expertise is structural and functional MRI.
