Katherine B. Bevans, PhD is a Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a founding member of the CHOP Center for Child Health Development and Director of the Center?s Partnership Core, which aims to advance Patient-Centered Outcomes Research in pediatrics.
As a child health outcomes researcher and methodologist, Dr. Bevans is committed to advancing the measurement of children?s health using innovative and novel methods that are conceptually grounded, developmentally appropriate, and patient-centered. She is an expert in developing pediatric patient reported outcome (PRO) measures for use in clinical and comparative effectiveness research, clinical care, and health care performance evaluations. Dr. Bevans has developed and validated over a dozen child- and parent-report health outcome measures by applying a rigorous mixed-method approach that accounts for the unique manifestations of health across the life course and children?s heterogeneous and rapidly-evolving self-reporting capabilities. As a PROMIS® investigator, she supported the creation of 22 PROMIS pediatric item banks including measures of children?s stress response, subjective wellbeing, physical activity, family relationships, and global health. Currently, Dr. Bevans is developing 4 pediatric oral health PRO measures on behalf of the AHRQ-funded Pediatric Quality Measures Program. These instruments will be used to gauge the quality of pediatric oral health care at provider, program, and state levels.
Virtually all of Dr. Bevans? work is grounded in the belief that stakeholder engagement enhances the value and impact of health outcomes research. Her contributions to the science of outcome assessment are made in collaboration with multiple stakeholder representatives including youth, parents, clinicians, and patient advocates. Dr. Bevans is leading a PCORI-funded project aimed at developing novel and replicable methods for identifying patients? health outcome priorities. Her team developed the prioritization approach to address a primary weakness of several existing health valuation methods ? that they are too difficult and burdensome for most children to understand and reliably complete. This project is one example of Dr. Bevans? commitment to enhancing the meaningfulness and impact of pediatric health research by developing new ways to co-produce knowledge in the context of equitable partnerships involving researchers, clinicians, patients, and families.
Dr. Bevans is currently applying her expertise in patient-centered research methodologies in her role as a research leader in the PCORI-funded National Pediatric Learning Health System (PEDSnet). As a contributor to the PEDSnet Engagement Core, Dr. Bevans is generating multi-stakeholder informed, prioritized research agendas to increase the patient-centeredness of future research focused on three pediatric conditions. In addition, she is partnering with CHOP?s Family Relations department to develop web-based training modules aimed at preparing multi-stakeholder representatives to engage in research partnerships focused on child health.
Dr. Bevans is the Director of the CHOP Violence Prevention Initiative Research Core. She leads evaluations of the Initiative?s school-, community-, and hospital-based violence prevention and intervention programs. She is also Co-Director of Research Training for the Leadership in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) training program at CHOP.
