The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute offers several summer internship programs for students:

Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology (PCEN) Summer Research Scholars Program – Summer 2023

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology (CHOP PCEN) is pleased to request applications for our 2023 Summer Research Scholars Program. This program aims to inspire future leaders in pediatric kidney disease research by engaging students in meaningful research and clinical experiences in pediatric nephrology. Applications are due January 30, 2023 – apply now!

The program is open to undergraduate, post-graduate, or medical students.* Start and end dates are flexible as academic schedules may vary for each student; however, an 8 week commitment is required. Students will work with a mentor on a research project, and will have opportunities for didactic training and clinical shadowing in nephrology. Students will also attend seminars about research and careers in medicine, and will take one or more courses on epidemiology or data science.

Students will receive a $4000 stipend. Please note: Housing is not provided as a part of the program. For more details, please contact Sarah Green, greens10@chop.edu.

The CHOP Research Institute Summer Scholars Program (CRISSP)

CRISSP is a NIH sponsored 10-week internship designed to provide undergraduate students with theoretical knowledge, practical training in academic research, and critical exposure to pediatric-focused research career trajectories under the direct mentorship of CHOP faculty. Students are immersed in a research group and complete and present an independent research project. Extensive supplemental programming includes broad career exposure, mentor training, clinical shadowing and opportunities to support high school interns conducting research at CHOP. A stipend and housing in the University of Pennsylvania dorms is provided.

Injury Science Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program

The Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute hosts the Injury Science Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, a 10-week paid summer research internship opportunity for undergraduate students. CIRP is a leading multidisciplinary center engaged in collaborative cross-discipline research implementing real-world applications. The REU program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), provides underrepresented students with mentorship and hands-on research experience in the fields of engineering, behavioral science, education, population science, and statistics. Students will apply this scientific foundation to assist in developing evidence-based prevention products, programs, policies, and interventions.

The CHOP Research Internship for Scholars and Emerging Scientists (CHOP-RISES):

CHOP-RISES is a summer internship program designed to build science confidence in local high school students traditionally underrepresented in research. Students are housed in a CHOP research laboratory where they are introduced to lab staff, develop labs skills, and are exposed to lab equipment. Student are also assigned mentors for the summer, participate in career exposure activities throughout the Hospital, learn CPR and receive college preparation advice. Students must be rising juniors nominated by a select partner school to be considered for the program. Students that successfully complete the program are invited to return the summer prior to their senior year.

The CHOP-RISES program is not open to external applicants.

The Internship Inquiry Form allows undergraduate and high school students to create an intern profile that is available to researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute.

This is not an official application. Your profile will be sorted based on the area(s) of interest that you identify on the form and made available to CHOP investigators in basic, clinical and translational research programs. Investigators will determine the availability/need for interns in their research groups.
