Children who are later diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder have subtle but measurable differences in attention as early as 7 months of age, a new study shows. Infants who went on to be diagnosed with autism are slower to shift their gaze from one object to another, according to the researchers, who identified specific brain circuits that seem to cause the slower response.

Searching for the Signs of Autism in Infants
One out of 88 children in the United States has been diagnosed as having an autism spectrum disorder. There is no cure and relatively few treatments that work well for everyone on the autism spectrum. But research, including ground-breaking studies on infants, is making great strides to better understanding autism spectrum disorders.

CHOP Researchers Find New Gene Variants Related to Autism Spectrum Disorders
Genetics researchers at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have found 25 “high impact” gene variants that occur in some patients with autism. Although rare individually, each genetic variant has a strong effect in raising a person’s autism risk. These findings could be incorporated into clinical tests for evaluating children for autism spectrum disorders.

Putting the Pieces Back Together: The Aftermath of the Newtown Tragedy
The Center for Autism Research (CAR) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia works to make rapid progress in understanding the underlying causes of autism. CAR’s mission is based on the principle that effective treatments for autism spectrum disorders, or ASD, will only emerge with increased understanding of the causes.
